Template:
You need to start with a file called template.html. This file will be what you use to create all the other pages. Your template will be due on Wednesday, May 21.
As you create your template be sure to follow all of the requirements for the website.

Requirements:
At least 6 pages
Each page must have a uniform heading and menu (if I select one of your pages, the top and left should not change at all!)
The heading needs to include at least one picture
Pages must have a nice background (doesn't have to be an image, a simple color is ok, but NOT white!)
Your 6 pages must include:

Home page, (index.html)
Links page
At least 3 others!

You must include links to:

Class website
At least 2 of your classmates' pages

One of these is your neighbor on your left

At least 4 other sites that you enjoy

You need to include pictures, each page should have at least one picture, not including the heading picture.

Optional items:
Using images as part of your links on your links page
Creating buttons to use for your menu

Our next projects will deal with creating a webpage. We will be doing this in a couple of different ways. We will start by learning to use html. I have included a link to a tutorial. We will be looking at a few specific pieces of information off of them, and you will be able to use them to help you when it comes to actually creating your site.

Dave's html code guide we will use this site quite a bit as it is the one I have used before and know.

You will be allowed to use any of these sites (or any you find by searching) to research different pieces of information, but Dave's code guide will be the one that I will be speaking from and making quizzes from.

Select that link and read through the first two pages, complete the following questions for your assignment.

On a blank sheet of paper answer these questions be ready to hand them in by the end of the period. (You are writing these out because I don't want you to just copy and paste, I want it in your own words.) Use full sentences (or paragraphs) for your answers!

Research Presentation

You need to create a five-minute presentation on a topic of your choice. The topic MUST pertain to an academic subject:

Math
History
Bible
Science
English
Art
etc.

The title of your presentation should be a question that you are researching. (i.e.

"How Many Primes Are Less Than a Given Number?"
"What Brought About the Napoleanic Wars?"
"Why Does Water Expand When It Freezes?"
"Who Was the Catalyst For the Creation of the Computer?"
"When Did the Ming Dynasty Rule?"
"Where Did Noah's Ark Come to Rest?"

Be sure that your question is broad enough that it will take five-minutes to answer, but not so broad that you can't cover the entire question.

As you are creating these presentations make sure that you are using proper research techniques. Keep a list of sources. Be sure to check the sources to make sure that they are reliable. Don't use the Internet as your only source, check out the library. If you are dealing with a scientific topic and want to do an experiment, be sure to include the pertinent data and some pictures.

For the actual presentation, remember the different things we have discussed about a good presentation:

Continuity between the slides
Brief Overview to start
Proper amount of information on each slide
Good contrasting colors between text and background
Pictures and animations that add to the presentation, not detract from it
Bibliography
Spellchecking

This assignment will be due on Friday the 29th of February. We will present starting on Monday the 3rd.

Each of you will be assigned a partner that you will assist you with your the presentation; they will run the slides for you and will be your aide for proofreading and helping you to fix issues that you may have. Be sure to take time to practice with them! You will be graded on your own presentation, and also on the presentation of your partner. (80% of your grade will be from your presentation and 20% will be from your partner's presentation.)

Newsletter Project

You need to write a newsletter about yourself. In your newsletter I want to learn about you. Please include information regarding:

Biography of you
Your religious background and testimony
Family background
My Home

Article about your home country

Where you've lived
Funny story about yourself

I also need to see your ability to follow directions and to format neatly. You need to include:

A full-width Headline that includes your name (either in the headline itself or as a subline as the author)
Two pages of articles
Two or Three columns
At least five separate articles

Each article needs to have a bolded title, then text that is full-justified.
You should also work to keep articles together, Whenever possible an article should not start at the middle of a column and continue to the next column.

Two or more pictures, including a picture of your family.
Font size for the body of the articles should be between 10 and 14 pts
Be sure to run spell-check and have someone else proofread for grammar and spelling mistakes.

Finalize Mail Merge Files

You need to finish off your mail merge documents:

You should have these three files in the MailMerge folder, they need to also be named in this way. I will simply delete any file that is not in this form. You will not be receiving credit if the name is not correct!

You also need to open up the files and make sure they are connected to the proper datasheet. The best way to make sure that the file is set up properly is to have a friend try to open the file. Mail Merge Data

One of the more powerful uses of Excel is the Mail Merge. We are able to take data from a spreadsheet and create personalized copies of a form letter.

To work with the mail merge data you need to create a new spreadsheet that contains the names and addresses of 25 people.

Your data should contain the following columns:

Last Name
Hand Phone
House/Block Number
First Name
Work Number
Phone Number
Street
Postal Code
City
Country
Percentage
Letter Grade
Tuition Owed

Place the columns in an order that makes sense!

Use the same names as you did for the gradebook, we will be including some values from the gradebook spreadsheet.

For the different numerical data columns you should create a random function to get the values.

We will look at a way to connect the Percentage and Letter Grade columns to the gradebook sheet you have created already.

Excel Project #3 - Gradebook

You need to create a workbook to track the grades in your class. Your gradebook needs to include:

A large merged cell with your name and the subject.
The names of at least twenty students listed down the left columns.

Name should be in three columns:

Last
First
Full

Each student should have a four-digit id#.

Twenty-five assignments that pertain to the class.

For each assignment you need to give the points possible.

Your assignments should have different values, some values may be used multiple times, but not for all assignments.

You also need to calculate the average score for each assignment.

A summary section to the right of the individual grades that includes summary information for each student:

Total points
Percentage
Letter Grade

On a separate worksheet you will need to list your grading scale for letter grades (ABCDF).

Nicely formatted data that makes the spreadsheet easy to read. This should include cell borders and background color changes.
You need to use conditional formatting to highlight high scores and low scores.
You need to format your assignment names so that they are turned 90 degrees.

In class we will be working on formulas that:

Take a list of names that is in full name format and separate it into two columns
Take two columns of names and combine it for a full name
Create a random id-number
Create random grades in the proper range
Look up the letter grade

I will also take some time to work on more advanced conditional formatting and other issues we come across while working on this assignment.

Word Macro

Create a macro named OldEnglish that will replace the word "the" with the word "thee" everywhere it appears in the document.

Assign the macro to the key combination ctrl+8.

Be sure you test the program on different paragraphs and documents to make sure that it works properly. When you are done, go to the Visual Basic editor and copy the code into your document. Then save the document as:

You will be working on two projects in Word for the next couple of days. These projects will cover the things you know about Word. Each document needs to be saved in the class folder using the file name I give.

Document 1: Newsletter
Create a newsletter. Your newsletter should be about your family. You should have articles discussing your family, your home country, your reason for being in Singapore, and a story of something funny that has happened to you. You could also include other articles or sections. (For example, a puzzle or riddle; a quiz on Singapore culture; etc.) This document needs to include each of the following:

A full page width heading
Three columns of articles
At least three images or clip-art
At least four separate stories/articles
Evidence that you have run spell checker!
Footnotes - give some words in your home language, or some Singlish slang that you need to define for your readers, put this definition in footnotes at the bottom of the page. You could also have a footnote with the answer to a puzzle, riddle, or (if you include one)

Document 2: List
Create an informational sheet about an upcoming trip. Pretend that you are the organizer of this trip. The document you create is to inform them of the things they will need for the trip, as well as when they need to meet, and where they need to report. This document should be a full-size sheet giving a list of items needed for a trip. Include:

A Title
Basic description of the trip
A bulleted list of the items each traveler will need
Information about when and where each traveler needs to report.

Save as: list-[name].doc

You need to create a webpage that shows the things you have learned so far in these first seven chapters. Make sure that you put into practice the things learned in each chapter. You may choose any topic you like, but need to use tags from each of the chapters. Be sure to include:

A title

A background color or image
Some alignment changes

Create the file using the tester on Dave's Site, then copy it into a text document and save it into the class folder named "html" save it as [name].html

You need to finish the bowling score sheet. Once you have the numbers, you need to make sure it has a nice formatted look to it.

Once you have completed the formatting, you need to add a column to the totals table. At the end of the season any player that has bowled a 270 game, or has an average score of 230 is invited to an individual tournament. Add a column that displays a "Yes" or "No" telling whether the player is invited to the tournament. As with all things in Excel, it needs to be a formula, not just you figuring it out.

Bowling Stat Sheet

You need to create a spreadsheet that gives the scores for the four members of a bowling team.

The team plays four games each week.

You should have scores listed for each game in a 4 week tournament (a total of 16 games apiece).

For each week you need to give a total score for each player as well as a total score for each game for the team. You also need to give the average, maximum, and minimum for each player each week.

At the bottom you need to give the total, average, maximum, and minimum for each player. These final stats should be given for total weekly scores, and also for individual games.

Be sure to include formatting to make the tables easier to read.

I will be giving an example of one of the weeks.

You need to get out your grading sheet from the presentations. You also need to open up Excel. We will be working on data entry. In Excel, set up a worksheet with student names (just first names, as written on the sheet I gave you) in column A and category names in Row 6. the Student names should be in alphabetical order by first name (be sure to include your name, even though you did not grade your own), and category names should also be in alphabetical order. BUT put the Extra Features column LAST.

In cell F2 put your full name. Merge cells A1:G1 and title it "Stand-Alone Presentation Grades".

Rename the worksheet with your first name (as is on the list).

After all the setup is done, go ahead and enter the grades you have collected.
If you gave any points in "Extra Features" add comments to the cell to explain what you gave the points for. Also, if you have any other comments to add, do so.

Add a total & an average row at the bottom, and a total and average column at the right.

Once this is done, wait for further instructions.

You need to work at your computer to finish grading the stand-alone presentations. You can simply open them up from your computer and view them that way. Once you are done, you need to hold onto your grading sheet. We will be using it to input data into Excel for our first Excel lesson tomorrow.

Once these are all saved, you will need to start your presentation on your own computer. After you get your presentation going, you need to move to someone else's computer and work through it. Create an informational sheet about an upcoming trip. Pretend that you are the organizer of this trip. The document you create is to inform them of the things they will need for the trip, as well as when they need to meet, and where they need to report. Basic description of the trip
A bulleted list of the items each traveler will need
Information about when and where each traveler needs to report.

A little more binary practice today. You will be creating a message in code. Your project is to write a message to me using ASCII codes. The message needs to contain at least two sentences. It must also be written with only 1s and 0s. Remember that each letter is 8 bits. We will talk a little bit more about the different letters and their codes. Today we are going to play a game called "Nim". It is a fairly simple game for two players. As we play we will be finding ways to guarantee a win. The game file is saved in our class folder. Before you play the computer, you should play against each other. You can just use paper. I will explain the game at the beginning of class.

Remember as you play that you are not just play for fun, but you are analyzing the game and trying to come up with a way to win EVERY time.

By the way, it does matter whether you go first or second. One of the players can force a win each time, but I won't tell you which one!

Hands-On Activities

You will now be creating some projects of your choosing in each of the given programs. In all cases your goal is to show your ability to use the program, and to show all of the aspects that you can. If you consider yourself to be an advanced user of the program, you need to prove it to me! When choosing what operations to use and how to show your use of them, be creative and use the highest level of functions that you know!

Microsoft Word

You are to create a one page document showing your ability to perform different formatting options on your document (font, alignment, etc.) In the text you should explain how to perform some of the higher functions and tools in Word, the things that can’t be directly shown (such as SpellChecker, etc.) Remember to use as many different tools as you know how! If you know Word very well, don’t bother wasting time on simple functions, as I see your knowledge of some of the higher functions, I will assume some of the other functions as well.

The actual text of your document is not really important. It can be telling about yourself or something you like, or just telling what it is you are doing in Microsoft Word.

Microsoft Excel

You are to create a spreadsheet. Your spreadsheet should show your ability to format a spreadsheet in an attractive design. It should also show your ability to use formulas and functions. If there is any doubt as to the use of a function, a comment would be a good plus. The spreadsheet doesn’t need to include a lot of information, but it should include as much as is necessary to show a wide variety of functions!

If you have never used Excel, you can skip this part.

Microsoft PowerPoint

You are to create a simple presentation. Your presentation should show the things you can do and give explanations of what powerpoint is used for and how to do some of the more important parts of design.

Internet

You will be researching two different topics. Using your research I want you to create a Word Document that displays the results of your research. Make sure you also include the websites that you use.

Topic 1: I really enjoy a sport called “Disc Golf.” You are to do some research for me. I want to find the nearest course to the country of Singapore. List the course, the country, and the distance from Singapore in miles and kilometers. I also want you to find the course that is the nearest to Acme, Washington. So, you are finding a total of 2 courses, and with each of them listing the country, and the distance from the given location.

On the same topic I want you to find the cost in Singapore dollars of purchasing a disc. So we have the same thing to compare, I want you to find the cost of an Innova Beast in Champion plastic. Find the cost of the actual disc, don’t worry about shipping. List the website, the cost in US dollars, and the cost in Singapore dollars.

Topic 2: I want you to find a page that lists the first 1,000,000 digits of the number pi.

We will be working on these tasks until Thursday of this week. All work needs to be completed by the end of class on Thursday! So, you cannot spend hours on these documents, be short and concise, but as extensive as possible. DO NOT USE THIS TIME TO TRY TO FIGURE OUT NEW THINGS TO INCLUDE, ONLY INCLUDE THINGS THAT YOU ALREADY KNOW!!

Here are a few things to check as you finish your page:

Make sure you have looked at the requirements and filled each of them.
Click through each of your pages looking for changes. There should not be any changes in the top or on the menu from one change to another, the only changes should happen in the body.
Double check each link on each page to make sure the menu works.
Double check the links you have added to make sure that they go to the correct site.
Check the title on each page to make sure that it works, the titles should not be the same on every page.

Power Point Presentation

PowerPoint Project

Goal: Create a 15-20 slide presentation.

Topic: The presentation needs to be informative:

Tell how to do something.
Tell about a hobby you enjoy.
Describe an event in history.
Tell about your home country, state, or city.
Tell a Biblical story.
Be creative!

warning: topics are subject to rejection, so choose wisely! If you are concerned, ask early!

Requirements:

Presentations should be stand-alone (you shouldn’t have to do any talking)
Slides should work well together (use a template)
You need to use transitions and animations.
Transitions and animations should be smooth, and not detract from the presentation (don’t use the transitions that take 20 seconds to show the slide!)
The user should be able to progress through the show in order, or jump to specific slides (use hyperlinks)
The information you give needs to be accurate, be sure to list any references that you use. (Have a bibliography page with URLs of websites and names of books)

Grading:
Your presentation will be graded by your peers. We will spend a day or two displaying the presentations in the class. During that time, each of you will fill out an excel sheet critiquing each of the presentations. I will fill the sheet out as well.

Be sure to look at the second tutorial, "Tips" for some good guidelines about the display.

Here is the Grading sheet you will need to save it to your folder. Look at the comments to see what each category is asking for.

Due Date:
We will present our shows on March 3 and 4. You will need to be ready to go at the beginning of class on Thursday as I will select the order at random. You will not be able to work on the presentation during class on Thursday!

You are going to produce a spreadsheet for calculating the final grades for a set of students.
The assignment needs to include:

Your sheet should include 15 students listed with both first and last names in separate columns.
You will also need to include at least ten different assignments.
Each assignment will need to include a spot for the name of the assignment, and another cell to put the maximum score possible for that assignment.
For each student you need to calculate the total points earned, and the final percentage.

You are to make three documents, I have listed below what those documents need to be and given some examples as to what type of information they can hold.

1	A one page document which includes the use of a bulleted list.	Compose a note inviting friends to a get-together at your house, including a list of things to bring with them. Write a report about a book listing five facts about the main character

OK, I want to welcome you to the class and lay down a few basics about the class.

Overview
We will be covering a wide range of topics in this class. Most of these topics will deal with different software programs and how to best make use of them. We will also spend some time studying Computer Science, and basic programming. We will have units that deal with Microsoft Office, Website Design, Programming, and Images, as well as other various computer details.

A large portion of the things we cover in the class will deal with the interests of each of you as students, but I will not limit my topics to what you want to learn!

Pre-Assessment
These next few days we will be used to find out some of the topics you already know, and little about some of the things you hope to learn. As you complete these assessments, don't worry about a grade for them. Simply do the best you can and show off as many skills as you know. If you don't know anything about a given program, that's OK, you'll learn as we go!

Once we finish with this part, you can read on to see what I'm expecting you to do over the next few days.

Daily Procedures
There are just a few things I expect from you so that we can learn as much as possible this term:

When the bell rings I expect you to be at your computer and logged in!
Your first task will be to visit this website to find the instructions for the day. Each day you should check here, even if you think you know what we are doing, as I may have changed my mind overnight, or I may have found some good information to help you.
Get to work on whatever task I have given!

Assignment Procedures
You will soon have access to the folder "V:\Classes\Computer9". All assignments will be turned in by placing them in a particular folder inside that directory. I will give specifics about each assignment as the time comes to turn it in.

Important note:
It is important that you keep a copy of each document in your own folder. You only place the file in the public folder when it is time to turn it in.

Grading Procedures
Most of the grades in this class deal with individual assignments and projects. We may have a couple of quizzes, but won't have exams. There will also be some grades dealing with participation in class and ability to keep on task.

I have graded your Sum Numbers programs, please open that file and check the message I left for you at the bottom of your program. Once you have checked your grade, please move the file to your own documents folder and delete it from the V drive. A couple of you need to redo the assignment, you can look off this page to see what the program is supposed to do.

Make sure that all of your files are saved in your documents folder, and only programs you are turning in are put in the Public folder.

Guessing Game Program

When the number is finally guessed, be sure to tell how many guesses it took.

Another bonus would be to ask if the user wants to play another game.

The text does not need to be exact, but the basic message should be same.

Posting WebPage

Today we are going to post webpages to the internet. This is not a required assignment, but I want to give you all the chance to post these pages you have worked hard on to the internet. In order to do this we need to do a couple of things.

First, we need to find a host. There are hundreds of web hosts for webpages. These hosts vary in services they offer and in costs. In order to find one that fits your needs you will want to do a lot of searching, and maybe some trial and error. (Try a site, see if it works for you, if not, try another)

Each person will have different needs, and different things that they are looking for.

Once you have found a site that you want to use, you need to set up an account and begin uploading your pages.

Important note!

Before you post your site there are a couple of things you will want to change:

Don't include personal information such as: phone number, mailing address
Be careful of the email address you use. Don't give your primary address as you will quite likely start getting junk email messages. (If you don't have one, set up a hotmail account to deal with all your junk mail.)
Change or remove the links to your friends' pages.
Make sure you are following all rules of the host (they may require you to add code for advertising.)

Once you have changed your pages you can follow the steps to upload them to the internet. Now, your friends from other places can find your page!

We will be looking at some of the things you will run into while you try to upload your page.

OK, I looked at your template pages, as well as what you have in your file so far and I created a file with notes in it. Go to your V drive folder and look at the file "Notes from Mr. Whittaker.txt" You will find some comments about your page, then some general instruction regarding the document. You are welcome to add a comment at the top in response to what I've said. You also need to do the things I have said in the note. When adding a comment, simply go to the top of the document, hit enter a couple times to create some room. press F5 to show the date, add your name, then press enter and type your note to me. I will see it the next time I look for it!

Also, please make sure that you are placing your most up to date files on the V drive every day!

Instructions for Wednesday

Save your file to your computer. (You should have already done this)
Save your file to "V:\Classes\Computer9\Presentations" with your name as the file name.
Click "Grading Sheet", select "Save"
Save the file to "My Documents" with the name "Ppt Grading Sheet Fred" (replace Fred with your own name though!)
Right-click on the new file, go to properties, and turn off read-only.

On the View menu select comments to stop them from displaying. (You can still read the comment by placing your mouse over the cell.)

We will discuss what each category means and begin watching the presentations on Wednesday.
After we are done with the presentations you will copy the Grading sheet you created into the folder listed in step 2.

PowerPoint Project

Goal: Create a 15-20 slide presentation.

Topic: The presentation needs to be informative:

Tell how to do something.
Tell about a hobby you enjoy.
Describe an event in history.
Tell about your home country, state, or city.
Tell a Biblical story.
Be creative!

warning: topics are subject to rejection, so choose wisely! If you are concerned, ask early!

Requirements:

Presentations should be stand-alone (you shouldn’t have to do any talking)
Slides should work well together (use a template)
You need to use transitions and animations.
Transitions and animations should be smooth, and not detract from the presentation (don’t use the transitions that take 20 seconds to show the slide!)
The user should be able to progress through the show in order, or jump to specific slides (use hyperlinks)
The information you give needs to be accurate, be sure to list any references that you use. (Have a bibliography page with URLs of websites and names of books)

Grading:
Your presentation will be graded by your peers. We will spend a day or two displaying the presentations in the class. During that time, each of you will fill out an excel sheet critiquing each of the presentations. I will fill the sheet out as well.

Be sure to look at the second tutorial, "Tips" for some good guidelines about the display.

We will present our shows on October 13 and 14. You will need to be ready to go at the beginning of class on Wednesday as I will select the order at random. You will not be able to work on the presentation during class on Wednesday!
